Design for Manufacturability (DFM)

Design for Manufacture is an approach during design aimed at reducing the cost of manufacture and making this process easier to complete.

DFM aspects include:

  • Making molded parts easy to remove from molds.
  • Use a larger radius on angles to ease material flow.
  • Reduce the need for machining.
  • Reduce the need for multiple operations.
  • Using standard parts wherever possible.
  • Using single materials rather than composites.
  • Do not over-specify tolerances.
  • Dimension from a single datum to reduce tolerance errors.
