Standards which are not used are impotent. It does not matter how good they are or how much effort was expended in defining them: if they are not used, and used well, then they will be of little or no benefit. To make standards work requires not only effort in defining them but also in using them and persuading others to use them also.

The final part of this book looks at how standards may be chosen and used in a professional organization.
